Today is Dr. King's birthday.  In the United States, Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy is commemorated on the 3rd Monday in January. 

Here is a lovely picture of Martin Luther King, Jr. with his wife Coretta Scott King and their first daughter Yolanda in 1956.  Do you know how many children the Kings had together?  You can find out in the family portrait below.

First, read this list of New Year's resolutions.  Which ones do you like the most?  Discuss with a partner or small group. 

Next, make your own list of 10-20 resolutions, or goals for the year.  Then, share your goals with a partner or small group.

Extension activity:  What is a past resolution or decision you made that has had the most positive impact in your life? 

Unscramble 'Happy New Year!' by rearranging the 12 letters in ‘Happy New Year’ to see how many new words you can create.  One new 6-letter word is ‘appear’ and one new 3-letter word is ‘awe’. 

Activity:  See if you can find at least 2 more 6-letter words, 5 5-letter words, 10 4-letter words, and 10 more 3-letter words.  If you want a challenge, find the 7-letter word! 

The answer key with over 80 words can be found here, but try your best before you check!  An extension activity is to write sentences with the new words you found.  

There are 52 'Would You Rather...' Discussion Questions.  An example question is: "Would you rather play drums or guitar?" and an example answer could be: "I would rather play guitar because I think acoustic guitar music sounds beautiful." Take turns asking and answering the questions with a friend or in a small group.
